Avery is a lovable 4-year-old Golden originally rescued from Korea as a puppy. Avery aims to please and has had quite a bit of formal training. He listens well, walks well on a leash and knows basic commands.

Avery is certain that he was born to be a lap dog! He is snuggly and as sweet as can be! He loves stuffed animals and toys.

Avery is a lover of all humans, though he is most comfortable with adults and older children. He has had minimal exposure to infants/toddlers and does not seem to be too interested in them one way or the other.  Yet due to his limited experience with tiny humans, he should really only be housed among adults and dog-savvy older children.

Avery has a couple of challenges that need to be overcome in order for him to be the perfect Golden!

First, due to Avery spending his critical, formative first months in Korea, he is quite behind in his socialization. He was not properly or positively exposed to people, other animals, noises or objects and can be reactive and nervous around new people/pets/objects. He barks when encountering new situations, but he does warm up quickly once he finds he is not in danger. Because of this deficit, Avery needs a strong, confident, savvy handler who can help him learn to trust the world.

Avery's second challenge, also stemming from his lack of proper socialization and exposure, is that he is fascinated by small wildlife. Avery will definitely try to chase rabbits, birds, and other small animals. It is likely he will react the same way to cats and small dogs that run from him. In his last home , he reportedly caught several small animals, including squirrels and an opossum. It is not recommended that Avery live with small dogs or cats for this reason.

If you are interested in learning more about a GRRSWF dog, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://www.grrswf.org/index-2.html

PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Ocala. If you live OUTSIDE of our service area and are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please note that we will only consider an application for senior dogs (over the age of 8) or dogs with special needs (usually medication).  BEFORE submitting your application, send an email to info@GRRSWF.org to request an exception to our service area. If that approval is given, you will be asked to complete an application, clearly stating on it that you are interested in a special needs or senior dog.  However, please be aware that, unfortunately, there are some locations we simply cannot cover because we do not have sufficient representation in those areas to perform the required home visits prior to the adoption, or follow-up visits afterward. If that is the case, we will be happy to refer you to a local rescue or shelter.
