Here is a very complete report from our volunteer who took Gus in:

"Gus is heartworm NEGATIVE and his fecal is negative, too.  Don't know how that happened considering he has been given NO vacs or preventions since 2009.  His only issue is being over-weight.  He's a 65 lb Golden in an 81 lb body!!!  And with all the fur he has--from NOT being brushed regularly--he looks like he's over 85 lbs, so I was surprised when he weighed in at 80.8 lbs today.  He's as sweet as sweet can possibly be and has already won the hearts of everyone at the vet's office.  He just needs someone to spend time with him--he is attention-starved big time.  He knows some basic commands--sit, stay, paw.  But he does jump up on everybody he meets, not in a mean way, he's just super friendly.  And again, this often happens when a Golden doesn't get much attention.  Well, he's getting attention now at the vet and he's loving life!!!  He loves baths, blow-drying, brushing, car rides, treats, food, people, anything and everything.  He wanted to play with every dog at the vet's office today--big and small alike--so I don't think there will be any problems with other dogs.  He might be a little too interested in other dogs sometimes and the other dogs might take offense at that.  But I really can't see Gus being anything but sweet and playful in all situations.  I have no idea about Gus and cats.  He's never been around any as far as I know and there were not any cats at the vet today (very strange).  Anyone fortunate enough to adopt this dog will have a true Golden Treasure and I hope whoever it is will spend lots and lots of time with this boy.  When he was adopted from the shelter, he was an inside dog.  But for the past year, he has been an outside dog because the owner did not want dog hair in the house after she gave birth to her daughter!!!  This is why Gus is sooooo attention-starved.  He just wants what every Golden wants--to be with his human(s) 24/7!!!  He's a great dog and I would keep him myself if I could..........Some additional info--he is a digger, but he does not dig to escape.  He just likes to dig holes and then lie down in the cool earth.  He has lived in a very large yard with a 4-ft fence, chain-link, so he isn't prone to jump fences to escape either.  But he will chew his leash and then tug really hard causing the leash to break...and then he takes off.  I personally would recommend using a leash made out of unchewable material like chain!!!  I took him for a walk today and at first all he wanted to do was bolt and run.  But it didn't take long before he realized that I wasn't going to let that happen and then he settled into just walking nicely.  He rode very well in the car.  He doesn't have any toys to play with because he supposedly shreds them.  If I have any Tuffie Toys, I'll send one with him.  Those are virtually indestructable for the most part.  And by the way, Gus has gorgeous teeth.  Even the vet commented on how beautiful his teeth are.......... he's a wonderful dog and deserves a wonderful family to love and cherish him."
