Woody is a very lucky boy who, at about 10 years old, has been loved by two families. The second family took him in when his original owners were no longer able to keep him, they would love to keep him but are finding that a third dog in their already busy home is just too much so they asked us to help find a wonderful forever home for him.

The following are some questions and answers from the surrender form that his current home submitted to us. They obviously know Woody well and have given us a wonderful description of his personality and needs.

Why are you giving up this dog? We already have two large dogs (laborador and husky) and two children, 5 and 7.  Took him on because his former family had a baby who was born very ill.  The dog was very good with the baby, but they just couldn't properly care for him with the needs of their child.  He is very good with our children.  All around a great dog, but three is just too many our family to handle.

What are the dog's bad points? He is sometimes hesitant to go through a doorway if I am standing near the door.  He may have had a door closed on him at some point in his past.  He will bark at the back door when he wants to come inside.  He would be very happy to only go outside to go to the bathroom, actually.  He's calm, a little lazy, loves the indoors, loves to eat, and is, consequently, a bit overweight.  He may be okay as a single dog, but I am sure he loves being in a pack.  He fits in very nicely with our two dogs.  He is not an alpha.  He is actually at the bottom of our pack and can sometimes be a little shy with people.  Sometimes he needs to go out late in the evening or early in the morning to pee.  He will "nose" me to wake me up.  If he is kept outside he will dig a shallow hole in the grass to lay in the cool dirt.  He also will go in a muddy ditch if he can find one.

What are the dog's good points? He is extremely gentle with the children.  Has no aggression toward the other dogs or strangers.  Before we took him he lived as a lone dog with working parents who were away from the home in the daytime.  He is clearly very happy here with other dogs.  Ideally, he would join a home with other dogs, but he has lived without other dogs fine as well.  He will bark if someone is at the door, but once they are in he just wags and wants to be pet or is a bit shy.  He is excited enough to jump up, but too lazy and big to actually do it.  Very calm disposition.  Really a very lovely dog.

This dog is currently in one of our wonderful Foster Homes for evaluation and lots of love. All of our dogs stay in their Foster Homes for a minimum two week evaluation period, then remain there until their Forever Home finds them.

All GRRSWF dogs have undergone an full examination by a veterinarian and any health concerns have been addressed. All dogs are current on vaccines, have been tested for heartworm and intestinal parasites, and are provided with monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives for the duration of their time with us.

If you are interested in learning more about this dog, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://grrswf.org/index-2.html .

PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Tampa, and sometimes slightly beyond if needed or possible. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs but live outside our usual area of operations, please us know as soon as possible; this will allow us to ascertain whether we have volunteers in your area who would be able to assist in processing your application, and may save you from completing an application that we might be unable to process. Unfortunately, much as we would like to, there are some locations that we are simply unable to cover as we do not have sufficient representation in that area to perform the required home visits prior to the adoption, or follow-up visits afterward.
