Chewy is a 6 year old retired Service Dog whose former owner was unable to keep him. He is a very well behaved dog, very sweet and laid back. He is a great dog.
Chewy does have hip issues and the radiographs show this to be arthritis so he will need to take some medications for this for life. He also tested positive to hypothyroidism and started medicine in 8/18/2010 for this. Hypothyroidism is easily managed with the cheap medication and, if managed correctly, should have no impact upon the length of his life. Chewy needs to lose weight in general and especially for his arthritis. He is a registered service dog.
09/28/10 UPDATE: Chewy's Foster Dad reports that Chewy has lost 7 pounds in four weeks which is great news.
10/11/10-Foster Update-The big boy is doing great, no signs of any problems. He listens well and gets along well with both male and females. He will fetch anything you can throw and will return it with another item you didn't throw, he loves to play keep away. He is now at 85.4 lbs, but is a little finicky on what he'll eat. Chewy goes in and out the doggy door without hesitation. He will make someone a great companion, another dog or a child will be the best match.
This dog is currently in one of our wonderful Foster Homes for evaluation and lots of love. All of our dogs stay in their Foster Homes for a minimum two week evaluation period, then remain there until their Forever Home finds them. All GRRSWF dogs have undergone an full examination by a veterinarian and any health concerns have been addressed. All dogs are current on vaccines, have been tested for heartworm and intestinal parasites, and are provided with monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives for the duration of their time with us. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs but live outside our usual area of operations, please us know as soon as possible; this will allow us to ascertain whether we have volunteers in your area who would be able to assist in processing your application, and may save you from completing an application that we might be unable to process. Unfortunately, much as we would like to, there are some locations that we are simply unable to cover as we do not have sufficient representation in that area to perform the required home visits prior to the adoption, or follow-up visits afterward.
