Learn more about the Golden Retriever. Misty needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start?
Misty is a five year old female who came to us from Polk County where she was surrendered by her owner. As best we know the story she spent most of her life outside and certainly wasn't cared for like she deserved. Living outside took its toll on this girl. She was obviously in an environment that provided little emotional support. She developed thunder-phobia and frequently tried to escape from her fenced yard when storms approached. Her life also included lack of regular health care. When we got her she was filthy, matted and full of fleas. After four baths, cutting the matts out and flea treatment by Jeanine and Karl she looked great and smell a whole lot better too. She has now been vetted and there is good news and some not as good. The good news first. To everyone's surprise, in spite of the fact that she lived outdoors, she is heartworm negative. Thank Goodness. She is currently 91 pounds and probably needs to lose about 15-20 pounds. We initially thought that she might have a thyroid condition, which would cause the excess weight but testing shows that those levels are normal. Diet and exercise will be needed to help her lose the weight and her adoptive home will have to be committed to attaining and maintaining a healthy weight for her. As mentioned she also suffers from thunder-phobia. Here is Florida many dogs do. In her former life she developed a significant fear of thunderstorms. That fear is still with her and any adopter will need to continue working with her on this issue. We have found that her anxiety is manageable however and she has not been destructive. Now our observations regarding her personality and demeanor. She is as sweet and loving as she can be. She just seems to love everyone she meets. She loves the water and will go in the pool as often as you will let her. As soon as she came into the foster's home and saw it she made a bee line. She thoroughly enjoys swimming. She also likes to play in the yard, chase balls and go for walks. She fits right in with the four other dogs in the foster's home. Absolutely no problems whatever. Additionally no problem with the cats either. This is a girl who seems to get along with everyone. She will make a wonderful companion for any adopter, young or older. She will fit in anywhere.
We have also discovered that Misty is a bit of an escape artist. GRRSWF recently hosted an event where Misty was with a number of volunteers' dogs in a playroom (air-condiditoned, indoor space) - Misty was the only one who was so interested in getting out that she actually managed to scale a four foot high fence. She wasn't that worried about going anywhere after that and was happy to hang out with all the people but her new home should have a fully fenced yard with at least a six-foot high fence, if she is going to outside unsupervised. UPDATE 07-02-10: Misty's Foster Home sent us the following: Misty is a beautiful five year old female who was surrendered by her owner in Polk County in early June.
